MUSEUM

Project Overview

This project was completed during a studio that focused on designing on the urban scale. The main building was a museum but the rest of the city block had to be designed along with the museum.

Program

The museum I designed consisted of an entry/Lobby space, exhibit spaces, an auditorium, classrooms, storage space, bathrooms administrative offices, and classrooms.

Design Concept

I designed a natural history museum that houses fossils and information about animals from the Mesozoic Era. This influenced my building by having the building split into segments, mimicking a fossil. I incorporated multiple layers, or skins to the building portraying layers of stone and the sense of time related to fossils and dinosaurs.

Site and Context

The site for this project was a block in the East Cut, a relatively new neighborhood in southwest San Francisco. The site was surrounded by commercial buildings to the north and residential buildings to the south. This greatly influenced my block layout and overall design.
